Eric Bana decided he would take being viewed as an \u2018underrated\u2019 actor as a compliment (which it is).<\/p>\n

When we spoke to Bana, 56, ahead of his gripping new thriller Untamed<\/strong><\/a> <\/strong>dropping on Netflix<\/a>, he said that he wasn\u2019t sure if he agreed or disagreed with the sentiment, but laid out how he has charted an atypical career in the moviemaking business.<\/p>\n

\u2018I always felt like at some point in my career, it would be really dangerous to only be available to play that lead character,\u2019 he told Metro<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u2018I’ve really enjoyed mixing it up and making myself available for different kinds of genres and films and different size roles. It’s way more interesting.\u2019<\/p>\n

That said, he also knows there are certain projects he \u2018definitely\u2019 would not do. Bad news Hulk<\/a> fans: going green again is one of them. But he sometimes he’s surprised himself with what he signs on to. Star Trek<\/a>, for instance, was a franchise he \u2018never imagined\u2019 he would want to be in, until Nero landed in his inbox. <\/p>\n

Bana explained that part of the approach to cherry-picking parts is his desire to always be a contender on the chopping block in the audience\u2019s mind. \u2018I wanted them to think \u201chere he is, bloody hell he could be gone in the next five minutes\u201d.\u2019 And indeed in many of his films \u2013 Troy<\/a>, Deadfall<\/a>, Hana \u2013 he is.<\/p>\n

He stars as parks investigator Kyle Turner and is the subject of a Gary Cooper wisecrack early on. The likeness is there: Turner is stoic, troubled and most at home on a horse.<\/p>\n<p>Set in <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2018\/05\/08\/why-you-should-visit-yosemite-even-if-youre-not-an-outdoorsy-person-7507473\/\">Yosemite National Park<\/a> (albeit, slightly fudged thanks to drone footage, since the show was shot in the still-beautiful British Columbia), Bana described the six-parter as a \u2018dream job\u2019. This was in part because most of his scenes were in the vast wilderness. \u2018I hate filming indoors,\u2019 he said, visibly recoiling at the thought. <\/p>\n<p>When the teaser for the new thriller dropped, there was <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/07\/08\/netflix-thriller-reveals-major-tv-return-underrated-hollywood-legend-6-years-2-23612955\/\">much commentary about how different Bana looked<\/a>, sporting a grizzled silvery beard. More gritty dramas or some light relief like Funny People? \u2018Try balance it out like a bit of therapy,\u2019 he laughed. \u2018Sometimes it feels that way.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Despite what his recent CV might attest to, he\u2019s still open to comedy. Although, he did add: \u2018It won’t surprise you to know that my inbox is 99% drama and 1% light, so I don’t have full control of that.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the answer is more Untamed. The show ties up neatly and has been billed as a limited series, but when things kick off (and <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/07\/17\/netflixs-new-crime-thriller-best-2025-far-one-key-reason-23678385\/\">we have a feeling this might<\/a>), Netflix finds a way. It\u2019s not something Bana shuts down. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018The nature of these [park investigative agencies], they move from park to park,\u2019 he explained. \u2018They don’t just stay in the one park their whole career. So it is feasible that Kyle could end up somewhere else.
